Important Notice about the US Visa Waiver Program (VWP):

ESTA registration now compulsory for visa-free travelers to the USA

1/04/2010

On 20 March 2010 the entry requirements to the USA, first introduced in January 2009, were tightened for all airlines. Travelers may no longer enter the USA without a visa under the "Visa Waiver Program" unless they have obtained an electronic entry permit from the U.S. authorities before departure.

You can register online via ESTA, the "Electronic System for Travel Authorization" to obtain your entry permit. If you do not have a valid permit when you check in for your flight to the USA, you will not be allowed to board the flight.

The permit is valid for two years, and we recommend that you register online well in advance, free of charge. The Web site also provides more information on this subject.

Registration can also be carried out by a third party, for example a family member or a travel agent.

Until further notice, travelers to the USA are also obliged to fill out the green entry form 1-94W in addition to ESTA. This is to be given to the U.S. authorities at the airport upon arrival as before.

Registration is not required for persons entering the USA with a valid visa, for U.S. and Canadian citizens, or for passengers holding a Green Card.

Registration

If you are an American citizen planning to reside for any extended period of time in the Genoa consular district (Liguria - Piemonte - Val d'Aosta), you should register with the Consular Agency.

When you register, you will be required to present your U.S. passport and complete a short form indicating your address and other contact information. By taking the time to register with the Consular Agency (which will then pass the registration to the American Consulate General in Milan), you ensure that, in the event of an emergency or if relatives in the U.S. urgently need to communicate with you, the Agency can immediately pass on the information to you. Also, should your passport be lost or stolen, the procedure for issuing a replacement will be greatly simplified.

You may also register online

As a foreigner you are required to have a Permesso di Soggiorno. Hotels take care of this automatically, otherwise one must apply at the Questura (Via Diaz, 2; Tel. (39) 010 53661)

The Consular Agency can also assist you with:

  • Passport Replacement
  • Report of Birth
  • Citizenship Statements
  • Citizenship
  • Voting Information
  • Internal Revenue Services
  • Residency and Work in Italy
